There will be dress up days, DEAR (drop everything and read), virtual guest readers, mystery readers, contests, and so much more. Your kiddos will be able to tell you all about it. Check in with them for more information. You can check our calendar for planned events. Our Facebook Page will have information as well.
This is the month where you can really rock your reading! Read as much and as often as you can. Experiment with genres and forms. Please extend this and do some writing in the same forms and genres.
Some ideas of literary genres to experiment with
We know you love books but consider the following:
Book reviews, character sketches, comic strips, descriptions, diaries (not your brother or sister's - those are private!), essays, flyers, how-to articles, journals, letters, monologues, news articles in newspapers, online or in magazines, opinions, plays, recipes, songs, speeches.
Did you know ~ There are 3 types of reading?
1. Eye Reading
Eye reading includes taking in words, sentences, and phrases through our eyes to develop meaning, which is the basis for almost all reading and ultimately comprehension for a majority of people.
2. Ear Reading
When you have a student who can’t “decode” the text but is reading/comprehending on or above grade level, they can still “read” with their ears. This is done through audiobooks, and assistive technologies that include speech to text and text to speech - such as Google Read and Write. Many eye readers enjoy ear reading as well.
3. Finger Reading
Finger reading, better known as“Braille Reading,” is how students with blindness and visual impairments engage with the written word.
